Hot Water Beach, Hahei and Coromandel
Coromandel is one of my favourite spots.
The Hahei Holiday Resort is right on the beach front at Hahei Beach. Get a booking right on the beach front, an area especially reserved for Motorhomes. You can make this camp ground your base-camp for the duration. In the summer months this camp-ground can become full so please book ahead to avoid disappointment.
If you travel from Auckland via the coastal road Highway 25 (from Thames to Coromandel) it is very scenic.
A day trip to Hot Water Beach is a must do, spend a little time digging in the sand to make your own personal hot water bath.
Cathedral Cove is a short walk along a coastal track from Hahei and if you take a picnic lunch this can be a great way to spend the day.
If you enjoy fishing then the Coromandel Coast has plenty of spots where a large snapper can be landed off the rocks.
If bush or coastal walks are of interest I would recommend the 309 track for the more adventurous tramp.
Collecting Tuatua’s (large shell fish) at Matarangi Beach has feed me and the dog many times. Chopped Tuatua’s with fresh coriander, egg and flour and a dash of milk can make excellent fritters. If you don’t wish to dig in the sand, green lipped mussels can be purchased from a number of local seafood farmers and these also make excellent fritters.
Itinerary (via the scenic route):
Turn left on to highway 25 following the signs to Thames, this could be a good place to stop for some shopping.
Following the very scenic coast road (highway 25) to Coromandel (D) and then around to Hahei (E) for a over night stop. The trip to Hahei should take you about 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic and stops along the way.
Hot Water Beach (F) is just a short drive down the coast from Hahei and there are plenty of beautiful beaches to explore around this area.
